Bespoke Engagement Ring Guarantees & Certificates in the UK: What to Expect

A bespoke engagement ring should come with clarity as well as beauty. Understanding the difference between a hallmark, a diamond grading report, an insurance valuation and a craftsmanship warranty helps you commission your ring with confidence.

UK hallmarking: what to look for

Precious-metal jewellery sold in the UK must carry a legally recognised hallmark unless an exemption applies. The weight exemptions are for articles below 1g for gold, 0.5g for platinum and 7.78g for silver. Ask your jeweller which requirements apply to your chosen ring.

A UK hallmark has three compulsory elements: the sponsor’s mark, identifying the registered person or business submitting the piece; the fineness mark, expressing precious-metal content in parts per thousand; and the assay office mark, identifying where it was tested. A date letter is optional. A purity number alone is not a complete UK hallmark.

Diamond grading reports: GIA, IGI and HRD

A grading report records the characteristics of a diamond. Shralite London’s published FAQ states that its diamonds come with certification from internationally recognised laboratories such as GIA, IGI or HRD. Confirm the issuing laboratory and the report accompanying your selected diamond before committing.

Check the report number using the issuing laboratory’s official verification service. Compare the report’s description, dimensions and other identifying details with the diamond being supplied. Where a laser inscription is present, ask your jeweller to show it under magnification and compare it with the report number. An inscription alone is not conclusive proof of identity; ask a qualified gemmologist to resolve any discrepancy.

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds

Your documentation should clearly identify whether your diamond is natural or laboratory-grown. Do not assume every laboratory uses the same report format or assessment system. Read the actual report supplied for your stone and ask about any treatments disclosed. A grading report is not an insurance valuation or a guarantee of resale value.

Insurance valuations and appraisals

Before arranging cover, ask your insurer which documents it requires and whether the valuer must meet particular qualifications. Confirm whether a valuation is included in your commission or available separately, its cost, and when it will be supplied. Keep your purchase documentation and diamond report securely alongside it.

What a written warranty should explain

Ask for the scope, exclusions and claims process in writing. Shralite London’s published FAQ describes a lifetime craftsmanship warranty covering manufacturing defects, subject to terms and conditions. It excludes normal wear and tear, loss, theft and damage from misuse.

If a concern relates to a stone setting, have the ring assessed rather than assuming every loose or missing stone is covered. A manufacturing defect and damage caused by wear or an impact are different issues. A commercial warranty does not replace your statutory rights.

Aftercare: resizing, polishing and prong maintenance

Shralite London offers complimentary cleaning and inspection services for its pieces. Our FAQ recommends an annual professional inspection and clean. Resizing is available at additional cost where the design allows; some eternity and intricate designs cannot be resized.

Ask for an assessment and quote before polishing, repair or re-tipping worn prongs. These are separate services, not automatically free warranty work. If a stone feels loose or a prong catches, stop wearing the ring until it has been checked.

Ask your jeweller these six questions

  1. Which hallmark will my ring carry, and can you explain each mark?
  2. Which laboratory report accompanies my diamond, and how will you demonstrate that it matches the stone?
  3. Is my diamond natural or laboratory-grown, and are any treatments disclosed?
  4. Is an insurance valuation included, or can one be arranged at an additional cost?
  5. What does the written warranty cover, exclude and require when making a claim?
  6. Which cleaning, inspections, resizing and repair services are included, and which are chargeable?

The Shralite London commitment

Our published service commitments include diamond certification from recognised laboratories, a lifetime craftsmanship warranty for manufacturing defects subject to terms, and complimentary cleaning and inspections for our pieces. Resizing is charged separately where possible.

Before placing your order, ask us to confirm the report for your chosen diamond, warranty terms, hallmarking details and any valuation requirements in your commission documentation. We do not list an insurance valuation or complimentary resizing as automatically included with every ring.
